Dr. Kamal has a global perspective growing up as a child in Romania in Eastern Europe, and in the United Kingdom in Western Europe, and finally in the Middle East prior to immigrating to the United States at age 17. In addition to English, his primary language, he speaks Romanian and Arabic fluently. Dr. Kamal takes pride in his ability to work sensitively with diverse cultural values and beliefs, particularly with LGBT patients who are an important and talented part of our society. He is also experienced with the conditions and concerns of geriatric adults. Dr. Kamal’s intensive medical training and experience in consult-liaison and geriatric psychiatry provide him with the delicate understanding needed to prescribe and adjust the latest psychotropic medications to patients with multiple medical comorbidities, who are taking other prescription drugs. His patients, including those with complex conditions such as HIV, cancer, diabetes, fibromyalgia, autoimmune disorders, and those with kidney and liver disease, benefit from his close attention and monitoring of their symptoms and all medications taken to ensure the best outcomes. In addition to the use of the latest psychotropic medications, Dr. Kamal works hard in collaboration with patients, their therapists, and primary care providers in an effort to effectively treat mental illness effectively while also striving diligently to combat and minimize the potential side effects of treatment. Dr. Kamal also uses genetic testing and interpretation to guide and narrow treatment for those patients that have not responded well to prior treatment due to enzymatic differences causing poor or accelerated metabolism of certain medications. His message to all patients is:
